How to choose a fish tank with cabinet
Buying a fish tank with cabinet is one of the easiest ways to start a new aquarium properly. Instead of hunting for a stand that might fit, you get a tank and a cabinet built for each other: the same footprint, the right load capacity and a tidy space for your equipment. This guide explains which size to choose, what to check before you buy and how much a fish tank with cabinet costs in our shop.
Step 1: Pick the size that fits your room
Start by measuring the space. Remember that the cabinet is usually a few centimetres longer and deeper than the tank itself, and you need some room behind and above the aquarium for pipes, cables and maintenance. These are the most popular sizes we make:
| Set | Tank size (L x H x D) | Capacity | Glass |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cube set | 50 x 60 x 50 cm | approx. 130 L | 8 mm |
| 4ft set | 120 x 60 x 40 cm | approx. 260 L | 8 mm |
| High quality 270L set | 105 x 60 x 55 cm | approx. 270 L | 12 mm |
| 5ft set | 150 x 60 x 60 cm | approx. 490–500 L | 10 mm |
| 180 cm set | 180 x 60 x 50 cm | approx. 500 L | 10 mm |
| 6ft set | 183 x 60 x 61 cm | approx. 600 L | 10 mm |
| 7ft set | 212 x 60 x 60 cm | approx. 700 L | 10 mm |
Current prices are always shown on each product page. If your space needs a different size, we can make the tank and cabinet to order.
Step 2: Check the glass and the build
Glass thickness tells you a lot about quality. Smaller sets in our range use 8 mm glass, while tanks of 150 cm and longer use 10 mm float glass. Our high quality 270L model uses 12 mm glass, rimless, with reinforced joints in which every layer of bonding silicone is protected by a glass strip. Many of our aquariums come with a no-leak warranty of up to 3 years.
Step 3: Choose the cabinet type
There are two main options:
- Wooden-style cabinets – finished in colours such as California walnut, Murano walnut, Cupria slate or dark grey gloss, usually with a matching cover. They look like a piece of living-room furniture. See more on our aquarium with cabinet page.
- Metal frame cabinets – a powder-coated steel frame with adjustable feet and push-to-open doors. They are a great choice for big, heavy tanks such as 7 x 2 x 2 ft. Browse cabinets and metal frames.
Step 4: Know what is included
A typical fish tank with cabinet set from Aquaexpert contains the aquarium, the cabinet, a cover (lid) in the same colour, glass lids and an aquarium mat. Some sets include extras such as a 3D background, natural stones, LED lamps or filters – the full list is always given in the product description. Lighting, filtration and heating can be added from our equipment and accessories section.
Step 5: Plan delivery and set-up
Most of our sets are made to order, with the lead time listed on each product. We deliver across mainland UK, Monday to Friday between 07:00 and 17:00. Large sets are shipped on a pallet with kerbside delivery, so arrange help to carry the tank and cabinet inside. Check everything on arrival and report any damage immediately. Place the cabinet on a level, solid floor, put the mat on top and only then position the tank.
Fish tank with cabinet or bare tank?
If you already have a strong stand or a sump system, a bare tank may be enough – see our large fish tanks from 4ft to 7ft. For most customers, though, a complete fish tank with cabinet is the safer and better-looking choice.
Not sure which set to choose? Contact us with the size of your room and the fish you want to keep, and we will help you pick the right fish tank with cabinet.
Fish tank with cabinet – frequently asked questions
How much does a fish tank with cabinet weigh when full?
Roughly 1 kg per litre of water, plus the glass, substrate and cabinet. A 260 L set can weigh well over 300 kg when running, and a 600–700 L set can approach a tonne, so always choose a solid, level floor.
Can I buy only the cabinet?
Yes. We sell made-to-order aquarium cabinets and metal frame stands separately, for example a 200 x 50 cm cabinet or a 7 x 2 ft metal frame cabinet.
How long does delivery take?
Items in stock usually ship within a few business days, while made-to-order sets have the lead time shown on the product page. Delivery is to mainland UK.
